PhD Research Opportunity - Digital Design of Structural Components Through Optimisation Techniques

This is a fully funded PhD studentship in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds. Part of the research will be co-supervised by Lecturer Dr Civ. Eng. AUTH, Evangelos Efthymiou. The opportunity is addressed to both undergraduate and postgraduate students ideally with Civil Engineering background (but also Architectural Engineering students are eligible to apply). For further information you can contact the proposed supervisor Dr Konstantinos Tsavdaridis (Associate Professor of Structural Engineering) at  Αυτή η διεύθυνση ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου προστατεύεται από κακόβουλη χρήση. The research study investigates the application of structural topology optimisation to metallic structural members and systems used in civil engineering. Topology optimisation problems utilise the firmest mathematical basis, to account for improved weight-to-stiffness ratio and perceived aesthetic appeal of specific structural forms. Aerospace and automotive engineers routinely employ optimisation techniques and have reported significant structural performance gains as a result. This PhD will focus on the optimisation and design of various novel types of metallic sections to improve and replace the conventional sections found in the market. Conclusions will attempt to highlight the potential benefits to the more widespread implementation of topology optimisation within the civil/structural engineering industry.
