Participants and Admission

The announcement of admission of postgraduate students is published on the website of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Applications, accompanied by the necessary documents, are submitted to the Secretariat of the Department of Civil Engineering, either in paper or electronic form.

Students who are in the last year of their undergraduate studies are also entitled to apply. The latter must, instead of a copy of their degree, submit a certificate of analytical grades and a confirmation that their undergraduate thesis is in the process of completion and will be supported before the start of the MSc. Any approval of their application is provisional and will only be finalised if they provide the copy of their degree or certificate of completion within one month of the start of the MSc course.

The selection procedure for the admission of the MSc is completed in September with the adoption of a decision by the Assembly of the MSc.

The application form and the necessary documents for admission to the MSc include all the information required by law for the evaluation and selection of the PIs. Of particular importance is the completion of additional information, in particular the degree category, the relevance to the MSc, as well as the information concerning the courses of the undergraduate curriculum which the candidate has successfully completed and which are relevant to the MSc.

The selection criteria for admission are:

  1. The overall grade of the diploma or degree.
The performance in the thesis and its relevance to the MSc.
  2. The performance in specific undergraduate courses, listed in the annex to the Regulations for Postgraduate Studies.
  3. The possible relevance of previous professional experience to the subject of the MSc.
  4. Experience in the use of software relevant to the MSc and in computer programming.
  5. Proficiency in at least one foreign language (preferably English). An adequate knowledge of a foreign language is a prerequisite. The level is set by the assembly of the TPM, in accordance with the Council of Europe’s system, which is accepted by the CEPOL (certificate of good (B2 level) or very good (C1 level) or excellent knowledge (C2 level)). Alternatively, you may submit a degree or diploma from an English-speaking undergraduate or postgraduate programme which demonstrates your competence.
  6. A detailed curriculum vitae of the candidate, listing any additional qualifications (e.g. participation in training seminars, participation in research projects, scientific publications, etc.).
  7. The content of the two required letters of recommendation.
  8. The general impression of the candidate during the oral interview. The oral interview is compulsory.

In addition to the above documents, the candidate may submit, if available (the following documents are to be submitted either as an exact copy or as a simple photocopy):

  1. Diploma or diplomas of postgraduate studies at a Greek University or a similar institution abroad.
  2. Doctoral degree from a Greek University or a similar institution abroad.
  3. Certificates of a possible very good knowledge of French, German, Italian, Spanish or Russian. If the candidate is a foreigner, he/she may submit certificates of knowledge of the Greek language.
  4. Evidence of any research and writing activity, participation in student mobility training programmes and professional experience or related experience.
  5. A declaration that they are not studying in another MSc or have not been exempted from the obligation to pay tuition fees for the MSc (“Programme Title”) they are studying.
  6. Foreign candidates, as a prerequisite for admission to an MSc, must submit a certificate of attainment in Greek or a certificate of at least B2 level. They may also present a diploma from a Greek-language high school or a Greek-language undergraduate or postgraduate programme of study abroad.

The application procedure is described in detail in the ASTE Internal Regulations.
